ALBAWABA – A defense deal worth $3.48 billion was signed between Israel and Greece on Monday whereby Israel will build a ‘multi-layered’ defense system for the Hellenic Republic.
According to a statement by the Israeli defense ministry, another supplemental deal is set to be signed regarding the Israeli sale of drone dome systems similar to that of the Iron Dome to Greece to the tune of $30.2 million.
The agreement has been in negotiations for three years before finally being signed on Monday in a formal meeting of representatives of both countries — the agreement marks the biggest defense export deal in Israel’s history.
Technical Breakdown
More than half of the $3.48 billion will be going to Rafael Advanced Defense Systems, which will supply Greece with David’s Sling systemsfor heavy rocket and ballistic missile interception, alongside SPYDER systems designed to counter unmanned aerial vehicles and drones.
In addition, Israel Aerospace Industries (ISI) will provide the Barak MX system, which is designed to defend against aircraft and missiles.
In Greece, the deal, along with the defense equipment coming with it, is known as “Achilles Shield” — and refers in particular to the SPYDER missile systems to be deployed on Greek islands as close as possible to the Turkish border.
