Qatar‘s prime minister called Friday for renewed diplomacy on an agreement with Iran as he met in Washington with Vice President JD Vance.
Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani met with Vance and discussed Pakistani-led efforts to broker a permanent peace amid a shaky ceasefire.
The Qatari prime minister “stressed the need for all parties to engage with the ongoing mediation efforts, to pave the way for addressing the root causes of the crisis through peaceful means and dialogue, leading to a comprehensive agreement that achieves lasting peace in the region,” the Qatari foreign ministry said on X.
Iran has repeatedly attacked sites in Qatar during the war, pointing to the wealthy emirate’s role as host of a major US air base.
Qatar has, over the last few weeks, been attempting to manage a backchannel mediation route between Washington and Tehran with the aim of reaching an agreement to end the war.
In an interview published this week by The New Arab, Sheikh Mohammed said there was “positive progress” in the exchange of messages between the two parties and that there was a “high possibility” of reaching a diplomatic solution despite continuing tensions.
He stressed that any future US-Iran agreement must safeguard the interests of Gulf states and the wider international community and reopen space for diplomacy in the Strait of Hormuz.
